Book Cover: Three Cups of Tea
“Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission o Promote Peace . . . One School at a time” by Greg Mortenson.
This is a delightful and inspiring book that everyone should read. Ordinary people would have been discouraged by a failure to achieve his goal of summiting K2, but instead Greg Mortenson demonstrates tremendous character and courage to build schools in the most neglected areas of Pakistan and later Afghanistan. His mission was undertaken during the era of 9\11 and a fear of Islam. The accounting of his encounters in attempting to fulfill his mission to educate the region’s children and eradicate terror is insightful, gripping, and entertaining. At times his work actually puts his life at risk. The reason for his mission can be summarized best with a quote: “I do it because I care about kids. Fighting terror is may be seventh or eighth on my list of priorities. But working over there, I’ve learned a few things. I’ve learned that terror doesn’t happen because some group of people somewhere like Pakistan or Afghanistan simply decide to hate us. It happens because children aren’t being offered a bright enough future that they have a reason to choose life over death.” This book demonstrates the power of one individual to make a difference in the world.
Favorite Quote: “"Once you educate the boys, they tend to leave the villages and go search for work in the cities, but the girls stay home, become leaders in the community, and pass on what they’ve learned. If you really want to change a culture, to empower women, improve basic hygiene and health care, and fight high rates of infant mortality, the answer is to educate girls."
